College Takes 3rd Place at NCAA Championships
Memphis,
TN---In
a 5-1/2 hour long match on Friday 5/14, the Williams College
Ephs claimed Third Place at the 2004 Division III Women's
Tennis Championships with a 5-4 win over the Washington &
Lee (W&L) Generals.
For
the third straight day, tennis action in Memphis was forced
indoors to the Racquet Club of Memphis due to inclement weather.
Coming out of doubles play, the Williams Ephs entered singles
play with a 2-1 edge over the W&L Generals. Williams'
Alexandra Maclennan and Julie Mallory earned the first point
of the day with a win (8-1) at #2 doubles over the Generals'
Lora Farris and Kristen McClung. The remaining 2 doubles matches
were both decided by tiebreakers. At the #1 position, W&L's
Lindsay Hagerman and Ginny Wortham defeated Williams' team
of Stephanie Hall and Kate Troy by a score of 9-8 (13-11).
At #3 doubles, the Ephs earned their second point with Brittany
Binet and Caroline Wasserman's 9-8 (7-4) victory over Elizabeth
Law and Lisa Mabry of W&L.
The
doubles points proved to be key, as the two teams eventually
split the six singles matches evenly. With the match deadlocked
at 4-4, Williams' Maclennan found herself down a set and fighting
to stay alive in the second set against W&L's Law at #3
singles. Maclennan then worked her way into a second set tiebreaker
and cruised to a 7-1 tiebreaker victory, tying the match at
a set apiece. Maclennan used her momentum to get off to a
quick start in the third, taking a 4-1 lead. Law fought her
way back to 4-3, but Maclennen proved to be too much as she
took the final set 6-3, giving the Ephs a third place finish
in this year's championships.
