The origin of the Lynx nickname dates back to 1923 when then college president Dr. Charles E. Diehl decided that the college should have a mascot representing its students and its athletic teams. Diehl chose the name "Lynx", supposedly because of the cat's uniqueness. According to the National Collegiate Directory, Rhodes is the only four-year undergraduate college with the nickname "Lynx." The Lynx mascot was designed by Larry Ahokas of the Rhodes Office of Communications in 2000.

FACILITIES

Rhodes College boasts state-of-the-art recreational and intercollegiate athletics facilities. The Bryan Campus Life Center (BCLC) officially opened in March of 1997, and is available to Rhodes' students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as to many members of the local community. The $22 million facility has become the centerpiece of campus life at Rhodes.

Within the facility, there is the newly-renovated Mallory-Hyde Gymnasium; a 7000 square foot fitness room; a multi-sport forum that can accommodate basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, golf, track, and tennis; an indoor track; three racquetball courts; two squash courts; and 6 locker rooms. Also within the walls of the BCLC are the Lynx Lair (an upscale snack bar and social area for students) and the McCallum Ballroom (used for dances, lectures, and special events). Adjacent to the BCLC is the Alburty Pool (swimming/diving), Dunavant Tennis Complex, and numerous athletics game and practice fields.
